When to go

June to October

The Bahamas enjoys a hot and sunny climate year-round, although June to October is considered the rainy season. It usually rains once a day, every day but for only short periods of time.

June to October is also considered hurricane season. If you are planning a trip to the Bahamas during these months, consider taking out travelers insurance on the off chance a hurricane forms during your vacation.

Air temperatures during the summer months range from 75-91°F (24-33°C) while water temperatures are approximately 83°F (28°C).

If you enjoy getting the best deals and diving at uncrowded dive sites, book your trip from June to October. This is low season in the Abaco Islands. Besides the sometimes stormy weather and the number of sharks present, diving in the Abaco Islands changes little from month to month.

November to May

November to May is the dry season in the Abaco Islands. During these summer months, you can expect sunny, hot and mildly humid conditions.

Air temperatures during the winter months range from 65-77°F (18-25°C) while water temperatures are 70-79°F (21-26°C).

In addition to great topside conditions, November to May is also the best time for shark diving. The most Caribbean reef sharks can be seen at Walker’s Cay during these months.

However, November to May also represents high season for tourism in the Caribbean. So be sure to book early in order to get a good deal on flights.

The Exumas

Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, consisting of over 365 cays.

The largest of the cays is Great Exuma, which is 37 mi (60 km) in length and joined to another island, Little Exuma by a small bridge. The capital and largest city in the district is George Town (population 1,437), founded 1793 and located on Great Exuma. The Tropic of Cancer runs across a beach close to the city. The entire island chain is 130 mi (209 km) long and 72 sq mi (187 km²) in area. Great Exuma island has an area of 61 sq mi (158 km²) while Little Exuma has an area of 11 sq mi (29 km²).

Sea of Abaco

The Sea of Abaco, located in The Bahamas, is an approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) long saltwater lagoon separating Great Abaco Island (known locally as the ‘mainland’) from a chain of barrier islands known as the Abaco Cays. Depths in the Sea of Abaco are generally a few metres, and shallow reefs and shoals can pose a serious hazard to navigation. Despite these hazards, the sea is popular with boaters and is sometimes referred to as a ‘marine highway’, offering a sheltered passage through the Abaco Islands. The majority of the largest settlements and towns in the Abaco Islands are located along the shores of the sea.

British Virgin Islands

While the British Virgin Islands consist of some 40 odd islands; most are nothing more than rocks or spits of land within the ocean. Solely three of the islands are of vital size: Virgin Gorda (Fat Virgin), Tortola (Dove of Peace), and Jost Van Dyke. These craggy & remote volcanic islands are just quarter hour by air from St. Thomas.

With its tiny bays and hidden coves, once home to pirates and cutt-throats, British Virgin Islands are among the world’s loveliest cruising areas. The islands mainly attract people who prefer to sail, though landlubbers can enjoy the beaches. Despite predictions that mass tourists can invade, the islands are still a paradise for escapists. The smaller islands have really colorful and eventful names, like Fallen Jerusalem and Ginger. Norman Island is claimed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island. On Deadman’s Bay, pirate Blackbeard marooned fifteen pirates and a bottle of Rum; giving escalation to the well known ditty.
